A live event painting is closer to a commissioned artwork than a typical event service. It is created in public, under time pressure, and then becomes an heirloom that hangs on a wall for decades. That combination is exactly why quotes vary so much from artist to artist and from event to event. Rather than chase a single number, it helps to understand what goes into the price. Once you know the factors, you can shape the commission to your budget without compromising on what matters most to you.
Canvas size
Size is the most obvious factor. A larger canvas needs more paint, more time and more physical effort, and it usually allows for more detail and more figures. Common choices for live wedding paintings range from medium canvases that suit a bedroom or study, to large statement pieces meant for a living room wall.
When deciding size, think about where the painting will eventually hang. A canvas that looks modest on an easel at a sprawling lawn venue can feel generous in a city apartment. Conversely, a very small canvas struggles to hold a busy mandap scene with dozens of guests.
Medium: acrylic, oil or watercolour
Acrylic
The most popular choice for live events. Acrylic dries quickly, which allows layering during the ceremony itself, and it is easier to transport the same night.
Oil
Oil paints offer rich colour and soft blending, but they dry slowly, sometimes taking weeks before varnishing. Live oil painting requires more careful handling and usually more studio finishing time.
Watercolour and mixed media
Lighter and more delicate, often on paper rather than canvas. These pieces can feel airy and romantic, though they need framing behind glass for protection.
Each medium has different material costs and finishing requirements, which influence the quote.
Time on site and the number of scenes
A single moment, such as the pheras, typically involves several hours on site including setup, painting through the ceremony and pack-down. If you want the painter to capture a long evening such as a reception, or to paint at more than one function, the hours increase.
Some couples ask for two smaller paintings at two functions, for example the haldi in daylight and the pheras at night. That is entirely possible but should be quoted as two separate pieces of work.
Level of detail and number of figures
A loose, impressionistic painting focused on light and atmosphere takes less finishing time than a highly detailed piece with recognisable faces of the couple, parents, siblings and grandparents. Every additional identifiable person adds work, especially in studio refinement.
Be clear about what matters to you. If the feeling of the evening is more important than portrait-level accuracy for every guest, tell the artist. If you want specific relatives clearly recognisable, share that list and their photos early.
Studio finishing, varnish and framing
Most live wedding paintings receive some studio finishing after the event: refining faces, tightening edges, correcting details that were impossible to see at night. Then come drying time, varnishing and framing. Ask whether each of these is included:
- Studio refinement hours.
- Protective varnish once the paint is fully cured.
- Frame, mounting hardware and packaging.
- Delivery to your home, especially if you live in another city.

Travel and destination weddings
For events in Jaipur, travel is a minor consideration. For a destination wedding in Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Pushkar, Goa or elsewhere in India, the quote must account for travel time, transport of a large canvas and easel, accommodation and meals. Large canvases cannot always travel by air in the usual way, so road transport may be planned. Some artists also need to travel back with a wet painting, which takes careful packing.
Season and date demand
Peak wedding season dates are booked early, and an artist can only paint one event at a time. A large live painting effectively occupies the artist's entire day, plus studio time afterwards. Booking well ahead secures your date and gives the artist time to plan the composition with you.
How to compare quotes properly
- Confirm canvas size and medium are the same across quotes.
- Check how many hours on site are included.
- Ask what level of facial detail to expect.
- Clarify finishing, varnishing, framing and delivery.
- Look at finished live event paintings, not only studio commissions.
- Understand payment, rescheduling and delivery timelines.
Making a budget go further
If budget is a concern, prioritise a single moment that matters most emotionally, choose a medium-sized canvas and let the artist lean into atmosphere over intricate detail. A strong composition with beautiful light often moves people more than a crowded canvas. You can always add smaller keepsakes for guests, such as engraved glassware, to round out the experience.
