Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Glitter Tattoo Artist

A practical checklist of questions on materials, hygiene, experience, designs and logistics to ask any glitter tattoo artist before you confirm the booking.

Booking an event artist often happens in a rush: a quick call, a few photos on a phone, a confirmation message. For a glitter tattoo station that is a risk, because what looks the same in photos can be very different on the day. The glitter might be craft-grade, the stencils reused, the artist inexperienced with crowds. A handful of good questions, asked before you pay an advance, will tell you almost everything you need to know. Here is the checklist we would use if we were hiring someone ourselves.

Questions about materials and skin safety

This is where cutting corners matters most, because guests wear the product on their skin.

  1. What glitter do you use? The answer should be cosmetic-grade glitter made for skin, not craft glitter.
  2. What adhesive do you use? It should be a body adhesive designed for skin, not craft glue or an unlabelled substitute.
  3. Can you provide a patch test? For guests with sensitive skin or for a bride who wants to be sure before the wedding, an artist should be able to offer a small test in advance.
  4. What do you do if a guest has a cut, rash or irritated skin? The right answer is to choose another spot or skip the design.
  5. How do you handle the face? Designs near the face should be small and kept well away from the eyes, with careful brushing of loose glitter.

A confident artist will show you the containers and explain without hesitation.

Questions about hygiene at the station

Many guests means many chances for poor practice to spread. Ask:

  • Are stencils single-use for every guest?
  • How are brushes cleaned between guests, or are disposable applicators used?
  • Is the skin cleaned with a wipe before application?
  • Is glitter dispensed from closed shakers or puffer bottles rather than open pots guests can touch?
  • Do you carry hand sanitiser and a bin for used materials?
  • How do you keep the table clean over a long event?

A quick hygiene checklist for the day

On the event day, a glance at the table tells you a lot: fresh stencil sheets, clean brushes in a holder, wipes within reach, covered glitter and an organised work surface. If you see stencils being peeled off one guest and pressed onto another, raise it immediately.

Questions about experience and style

  • What kinds of events have you done? Weddings, kids' parties and brand activations each need a different temperament. Ask about experience with your type of event.
  • Can I see photos of real work, not just stencil catalogues? Photos of finished tattoos on guests show the quality of edges, coverage and finishing. Our own gallery of past events is the kind of thing to look for.
  • How do you handle children? Patience, sensible placements and a calm manner are essential.
  • What happens if a guest is unhappy with their design? A professional should offer to remove and redo it where time allows.

Pay attention to how the artist communicates during these early conversations. Prompt replies, clear explanations and sensible suggestions are usually a good sign of how they will behave on the event day, when they will be dealing with your guests, your planner and your venue staff. An artist who asks you questions back, about the age group, the venue, the timing and the mood of the function, is thinking about your event rather than simply selling a slot.

Questions about designs and customisation

  • How many designs are on your standard menu, and can we see it?
  • Can you create custom stencils, such as a monogram or logo, and how much lead time is needed?
  • Can the colour palette match our outfits or brand colours?
  • Do you offer different menus for adults and children?
  • Can you change designs between functions if we book multiple days?

Questions about logistics and coverage

Practical details cause the most last-minute stress, so settle them early:

  1. How many guests can you realistically cover in our time window? Share your guest profile and ask for an honest estimate.
  2. Do we need more than one artist? A good artist will tell you if one person is not enough.
  3. What do you need from the venue? Typically a table, chairs and good light. Ask about outdoor setups and wind.
  4. What time will you arrive, and how long does setup take?
  5. What happens if the event runs late? Clarify extended-hour terms.
  6. Do you travel outside the city? For destination weddings, discuss travel and stay arrangements.
  7. What is included in the quote, and what are the payment and cancellation terms?
Red flags: vague answers about materials, no photos of real work, reluctance to discuss hygiene, or promises to cover any number of guests without asking about the event.

Booking with confidence

Keep a copy of the answers in writing, even if it is just a message thread, so that everyone remembers what was agreed when the event day arrives. These questions take a few minutes to ask, and a professional artist will welcome them because they show you care about your guests. Note down the answers, compare a couple of artists and choose the one whose replies feel clear and specific. If you would like to put these questions to us, our glitter tattoo artist service page explains our materials and process, and you can always contact us directly with your event details.
